Nurturing the Whole Child

At Shade Canyon School, we place the same value on learning about the arts, music and nature as we do math, science and reading. We believe that all disciplines are essential to cultivating inspired learners, creative thinkers and well-rounded leaders.

Inspired by and based upon the principles of a Public Waldorf education, the program of learning at Shade Canyon addresses multiple aspects of the developing child - physical, emotional, intellectual, social, cultural, moral and spiritual. We seek to help each child integrate into a maturing whole person, able to determine a unique path through life.

Lessons at our small, tuition-free charter school respond to natural developmental rhythms. Teaching emphasizes attention to all intelligence domains, offering students hands-on experiences and exploration that engages children through a variety of learning styles, including movement, arts, music and our senses.

Research on the Public Waldorf approach shows that students provided this type of whole-child learning become critical thinkers who are curious about the world, connected to their communities, and confident citizens.

At Shade Canyon, we aim to help students develop the following qualities:

A Sense of Wonder

Children are born with an innate sense of curiosity, imagination and playfulness. We lovingly tend these traits with ample time spent outdoors, unstructured play time, exploration of the arts and music, and attention to the natural rhythms of the seasons.

Self-Awareness

Practical work, such as gardening, caring for our classroom, or baking bread encourages a sense of belonging and responsibility for our community. With a foundation rooted in self-awareness, our students are able to confidently and bravely interact with both our school and larger community.

Social Fluency

At the heart of our program is connection and relationship fostered in an inclusive community that values empathy, compassion, cooperation and communication. Our caring teachers model healthy working relationships with parents, colleagues, and all stakeholders, which are essential to the wellbeing of the student, class, and school community. Everyone benefits from a community life that includes festivals, events, adult education, study, and volunteer activities.

Cognitive Strength

Our curriculum is rigorous and interdisciplinary. We integrate traditional subjects with art, movement, music and nature to foster intellectual resilience, innovation and flexibility. We meet each child at his/her stage of development so they can grow into their potential. As an understanding of child development guides all aspects of the educational program, students at Shade Canyon meet or exceed California State learning standards at each child’s developmental pace.

Shade Canyon School is currently an initiative member of the Alliance for Public Waldorf Education (APWE), to whom we are grateful for guidance as we work to become a full member and be recognized as a Public Waldorf School.

As a tuition-free public charter school, we aim to educate the whole child while remaining accessible, diverse, and in compliance with state standards. We invite you to learn more about our school by taking a tour or contacting us. We are currently enrolling for the 2024-25 school year and hope you’ll consider joining us.
